PHYS 454, Homework 5

Spring 2025

Analyze Mars

Instructions:

1. Go to the UA HiRise site: UA HiRISE DTMs

2. Find an interesting DTM data set

3. Get the data

You need to look for the raw elevation data in an image format. Stay away from the left hand column - that's the raw big files (unless you want to go nuts...)

Available Data

4. You should get something like this:

DTM - elevation

5. Adapt the python/colab notebooks you developed to process the spectrometer data to extract an linear elevation profile and make a plot. Try to calibrate your axis based on the information found on the HiRISE site. (Calibrate in the case means x/y/z should be in units of meters or km)

Image showing the line to be extracted

6. Prepare a document that contains your results. Comment on the morphology you see in your line extraction. (i.e. in this case, I might try to explain why there are peaks on the edge of this crater.)
