The first midterm will be held on Oct 9th, 2024, during class time, 12:00 - 1:40 pm. It is a closed book, no notes, calculators, just pencil and paper exam.
Topics will be:
- Setting up Netwon's 2nd law: $\sum F = m a = \ldots$
- Motion in a resistive medium, i.e. drag. Both linear and quadratic velocity dependence.
- Simple Harmonic Motion
- Damped and Driven oscillations
- Conservation of Energy and Momentum (at a level of 20700 review, since we haven't done much with them yet. Basically, you might need to know that the total mechanical energy is Kinetic and Potential. That sort of thing. And that $F = \frac{-dU}{dx}$, which you should carry with you for the rest of your lives.
The test, like any good physics test, will contain new systems you may have never seen before, and ask you to apply the techniques we've learned to these new systems.
If you want to more practice doing this, then please work on the first few problems from each of the sections in the book we have covered.
